Below you’ll find information about TSA’s history and background, management team, and contact information.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is an essential component of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, tasked with safeguarding the country’s transportation systems. Established in response to the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the TSA enhances security protocols across various modes of transportation, with a particular focus on aviation.
The agency is responsible for the security screening of both passengers and baggage at over 450 U.S. airports and employs a diverse workforce of over 47,000 individuals. This workforce includes Transportation Security Officers, Federal Air Marshals, explosives experts, canine teams, and other security personnel dedicated to preventing aircraft hijackings and ensuring safe travel.
Beyond aviation, the TSA also plays a critical role in the security of other transportation networks, including rail, mass transit, highways, pipelines, and ports. The TSA’s approach to security is both risk-based and layered, integrating intelligence data, advanced screening technologies, and variable security measures to adapt to emerging threats.
Programs such as TSA PreCheck exemplify the agency’s strategy to streamline screening processes for pre-approved, low-risk travelers at more than 200 airports. Initially part of the Department of Transportation, the TSA was transitioned to the Department of Homeland Security in 2003.
Despite facing scrutiny over its screening methods and the treatment of passengers, the TSA remains focused on its mission to mitigate threats to transportation security.
The leadership of the TSA is headed by an Administrator, a position appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the Senate. David P. Pekoske currently holds this position, having been first appointed in August 2017 and reconfirmed for a second term in September 2022.
Pekoske brings a wealth of experience to the role, with a background that includes serving as the 26th Vice Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard and roles in the private sector focusing on security. As Administrator, he oversees the vast operations of the TSA, which extend beyond airport security to include other transportation sectors such as rail and mass transit.
The TSA management team also includes positions such as the Deputy Administrator, Chief Counsel, Chief Financial Officer, and various Assistant Administrators, each responsible for different aspects of TSA operations. These leaders collectively ensure that the agency’s strategies and policies are effectively implemented across all transportation sectors, maintaining a high standard of security and operational efficiency.
Under Pekoske’s leadership, the TSA continues to adapt and evolve in response to the dynamic landscape of global transportation security, aiming to effectively counter and mitigate potential threats while ensuring the smooth operation of the nation’s transportation systems.
